2000 Gift of Casimera Konopka

Joseph Konopka has been referred to as "the quiet artist" who paints scenes of city streets, amusement parks, airports and seaside boardwalks devoid of the activity associated with these places. Most of his paintings feature a single female figure -- his wife, Casimera. He integrates close-valued colors and disciplined craftsmanship with the organized compositional structure of his paintings. He focuses on surface patterns to create an overall pictorial design. "Earring" has the appearance of a poloroid photograph that has faded over time. Muted colors and flat surface treatment produce Konopka's desired illusion of stillness and quiet.
