Family Resemblance

oil on canvas, 8 panels

2004 Purchase funded by The Collectors Club

Carl Gombert is captivated by the variety of expressions of the human face. In his eight panel painting, "Family Resemblance" Gombert depicts four men and four women of different races. Gombert used his own image as the base for each portrait, incorporating a grid system to achieve uniformity among the eight faces. He changed the hair, eye color and skin tones to draw attention to how we define "family" in our society. Gombert states, "I cannot escape the conclusion that the act of knowing one another is intimately bound up with the act of seeing one another. Portraiture is the best means for studying and revealing the divine spark that is within us all."
