Inokuma, Genichiro
Untitled
gouache on paper
1969 Gift of Mrs. Blanchette Rockefeller
Japanese artist Genichiro Inokuma was known for the abstract paintings he produced while living in New York. A friend of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, Inokuma combined traditional Japanese art with abstraction. In this gouache painting, he incorporated calligraphic marks within a field of white and gray. At the time he produced this piece, his artistic style was considered innovative.
