1970 Gift of Kanawha Banking & Trust Co.

William Scott was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He left Scotland at the turn of the 20th century and settled in New York where he worked as an illustrator. He was a modest man who made little effort to attract attention to his art. He derived satisfaction from his exploration of design, form and color using a variety of painting and drawing materials. "Change of Shift" is part of a series of drawings that Scott produced on the theme of industrial America. The simplified, bold form of the gray mountain is slashed by the dark, angular lines of the man-made objects. The muted, gray colors communicate mass and density and a sense of bleakness.
