1972 Purchase

Sam Gilliam is a third generation member of the Washington Color School that emphasized painting with pure color. He studied under Thomas Downing, another Washington Color School painter. Gilliam gained international attention for his shaped canvases and his draped paintings of the early 1970s. Gilliam painted "Lance" early in his career when his work focused on hard-edge geometric shapes and color.
