Black, LaVerne Nelson

oil on linen

1986 Gift of John A. Shannon, Jr.

This untitled painting by LaVerne Nelson Black depicts four Native Americans on horseback riding through the plains. The scattered stars in the sky indicate that it is a night scene, although the sky and landscape are brightly lit. The brightness of the scene could be the artist's way of indicating the presence of a full moon. The two figures in the foreground appear to be talking to each other as one gestures to the other. This painting is typical of the subject matter favored by Black while he lived and painted in the American West.
