West of Owaneco

Atkinson, George

West of Owaneco

pastel on paper

1992 Purchase funded by The Collectors Club

George Atkinson's fascination with meteorology fuels his landscape drawings of the American Midwest. Although his drawings appear to be based upon a photograph, they do not depict a specific location. Atkinson feels that focusing on details of a particular locale would detract from the dramatic effect of the land and sky. He focuses on the cloud formations, the colors in the sky and the various hues of the landscape as the sun rises and sets.

In "West of Owaneco", a road divides grassy fields and leads to the distant horizon line. A luminous sky casts a glow upon the grass and the field of corn. Atkinson captures the grandeur and beauty of nature and America's rural Midwest.
